NaNoWriMo & NaPoWriMo – It’s that time of year again!

Standard

2014-Participant-Twitter-Header-2 Last year I took part in the Spring and Summer camps for NaNoWriMo –footer-camp National Novel Writing Month – the main event takes place in November. I successfully completed all 3 challenges and have over 100,000 of writing I have done nothing with since.2013-Winner-Square-Button
Whereas  napo2013button2 imagesCA1461L5I wrote a poem a day, some from prompts some from my muse. I am DEFINITELY signing up for NaPoWriMo but have decided that for NaNoWriMo it will only be to write a couple of short stories so my monthly target will be 4000 words as opposed to 50,000! I think the minimum is 10,000 but have read that this year they have extended genres and they mention Haikus… I wrote 21 Haikus last Wednesday and even that many poems don’t have many words.

People can sign up already for the NaNoWriMo Spring Camp which starts on the 1st April.
I have collected shiny new badges to display here 2014-Participant-Facebook-Cover  2014-Participant-Square-Button   2014-Participant-Vertical-Banner2014-Participant-Facebook-ProfileThere are also tips to help you plan. I have been both a planner/prepper and a pantster (someone who approaches the target word count without a plan, thought or direction!)

inkspill leave before edit Cabin sign ups start on March 25th.

How many of you are going to challenge yourself to camp this April?

I have submitted the site to appear on the participants list on NaPoWriMo and am fully ready to take part with a daily poetry challenge. As with last year (due to copyright issues) I won’t post an entire poem here throughout April, I post extracts and blog about the prompts and experience.

I Have Nearly Done It! NaNoWriMo 2013

We didn’t make it to the German Market today – we are postponing the trip for next week.

Prince William was at the Library of Birmingham today meeting 4 poets – my older brother was there – we could have been too if we hadn’t stayed home…

I didn’t think I could do it and now I know I can – nearly 10K today! Blimey!
There is a message about validation doing the rounds and in the remaining hours I am going to try to finish and validate as the system gets overwhelmed on the 30th with 200,000 people trying to do the same. Validation has been open since the 25th.
This has not been an easy challenge and I am unsure that I will bother with the pressure of it again until I actually have a book in me to write.
But it has been fun.

NaNo GO, GO, GO!

Standard

In just over 24 hours NaNoWriMo 2013 will be over – this week I have been really busy and lost the free writing day as I worked an extra day. Today we both booked the day off to go to the German Market and start thinking about Christmas – more about this later – but 1st NANO!

I have been writing for an hour and a half and have managed nearly 2000 words – I am close to 40000 now and then I will be striding through the final 10K!

I am updating in small stages and watching the stats graph grow.

Day 26 Nanowrimo – 4 days and 12K …. hmmm

Standard
It finishes in 4 days – 4 DAYS!!
Eek, 3000 a day – including today… not going to happen – it is already nearly 11:30pm and I am working tomorrow. I had planned a catch up write tomorrow.
Tomorrow night I am performing at Drummonds 42 Flash Event. I will need to try and do some words on the Nano as well. I have some time on Friday and will need to write until it hurts I think!
It really shouldn’t hurt!

Day 25 NaNoWriMo – A Few Days Slippage

Standard

It has been refreshing to write some non-nano blog posts about writing events I have attended over the weekend, last week was fairly busy and I was tired. This week I have lots to catch up on with the NaNo Challenge and PAD challenge as well as preparing for my set this week.

35000

I have noticed today in surfing around that a lot of people are falling into 2 camps at this stage of NaNo –

  1. Those who have reached or are close to reaching their 50K goal and
  2. those who are nowhere near and falling behind.

Do not lose faith there is still a week – 7 days…. I had 15000 left to write when I started this evening – now I have less. Every word you manage is a word more to count…. so JUST KEEP GOING! You may get there!

Day 25 NaNoWriMo-2013-Power-Up-Flyer

Now any Wrimo will tell you that the problems start when the word counts dip or you miss days. 5 days ago I had written 34404  words. I was slightly ahead of the 33333 target. Then I got busy; Mainly with work and a couple of nights where I had neither the time nor energy to write much. This past weekend I was out all day Saturday at the Writers’ Toolkit Conference and Sunday at the Open Mic event.

Today I am trying to catch up – despite having the day off work I had other plans and so needed to spend the late afternoon and evening (now) catching up and here’s how I am managing.

TOP TIPS (FOR THOSE FALLING BEHIND!)

  • By trying not to think about the mountain I am going to have climb… Just look those few paces ahead, the next 100 words and the next,
  • Banish all thoughts of – OH MY! I have 4000 – 6000 – 10000 words to catch up on.
  • Keep updating the word count every time you need a writing break – I have been updating mine every few paragraphs, by 100 words or 500 odd and before you know it you have added 1000s of words!

I started this afternoon about 2.5 hours ago with just 35000 (having not written more than 596 words in 4 days!

35000 words have become 37120 (2120 words written so far today) today’s number 41666 (the devil’s in the detail!) That’s 4546 words to go which I realistically will not manage tonight – I have work tomorrow and flashes to edit for printing tomorrow before Wednesdays event.

I am working tomorrow but have had the evening plans cancelled. This will give me a few extra hours of writing time. Of course a bit like a high credit loan everyday adds another couple of 1000 words onto the running total and when you don’t have a stretch of more than 7 days ahead of you before the deadline it can get pretty hot under the collar! (So wear a round neck!)

So my next tips; NaNoWriMo-2013-Boss-Flyer

  • Carve out some time – re-schedule.
  • Work out how many words you have left and find out what your daily total needs to be – the greatest joy of NaNoWriMo is to watch the end word counts fall and treat yourself to word counts like 1190 – however, it is still achievable even if you have not managed to stay on track – my daily word count has to be 1840 (which is possible!)  as long as I manage at least that tonight.
  • The next step is to check your schedule.nano_13_cup_detail1
  • Day 26 – work + Time
  • Day 27 – Event + Time
  • Day 28 – Work + event = pockets of time need to be found to manage 1840
  • Day 29 – event + Time
  • Day 30 EVENT pockets of time need to be found to manage 1840
  • Day 31 NaNoWriMo Deadline day and also a day with a bit more time to finish up if need be (Buffer)
  • Then get off your blog and get on with it!

I tried to push through 38000 barrier – but I am drained now and have editing for my set on Wednesday (my 1st Flash Fiction event) I have worked out I need to write just over 2000 words a day to reach the 50K by the end of November.

I hope to get a bit done before Thurs to allow for less than 2000 a day after that. I will get there – this is my first NaNoWriMo and I AM going to win it! NaNoWriMo-General-Flyer

A Writing Day

Standard

Work was cancelled today so although I won’t earn a penny, I do get to spend some time writing.

I need to catch up with the NaNo Novel after managing less than 100 words last night, it really was just a token write.

nano_basic_shirt_roll

There is a writing conference in the city tomorrow that I found out about back in February. I was hoping to get into the city for the regional NaNoWriMo writing meeting, but the conference can offer me so much more, and costs less than a pair of shoes, when I think of all the money I have spent on workshops this year it seems worth going. I will try and book a ticket today.

Today’s plan – break the 36000 barrier on the NaNo Novel, catch up with PAD challenge poetry (currently on day 17/22), book tickets for tomorrow’s conference.

I will check in later.

Day 21 – 3 Weeks of NaNo – 1 week to go!

Standard

It is close to midnight and I haven’t managed to start my writing yet today. I worked all day and most of the evening and have spent a few good hours with Mr G tonight.

I plan on doing some writing and updating now for a bit. I was working tomorrow but have had the work cancelled – so one late night won’t hurt (famous last words, you watch me get an early morning call!) I am hoping to break the 35000 barrier tonight and use my customised image! NaNoWriMo-General-Flyer

Day 20 NaNoWriMo – NaNoNearly 3 Weeks!

Standard

I will update this post and hopefully the NaNo word count – just writing some as I was getting ready for tonight’s poetry event.

I managed 624 words – which brings me just over the average total for now (33,333) I have 33692 total words – but am hoping to add a few more tonight depending on time and energy if not my catch up will be over the weekend.

nano_13_cup_main2

Well I have managed another 560 words! I do have to work in the morning and need sleep so I will probably call it a night or just try for 200 or so more (feel the burn)!

34 252 – I made it over 34,000 (I have already made a 35000 picture, that’s an incentive to get there!)

Managed 152 words, am calling it a night. 2013-Participant-Vertical-Banner
